Cholesterol normal range and lipid profile
A lipid profile measures the fats in your blood. Enter your results to compare them with the usual goals.
Cholesterol report checker
Copy the numbers from your report. Fill in only what you have.
Your results appear here as you type.
For adults. The range printed on your report comes first, because labs differ. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Cholesterol chart for adults
| Test | Usual goal (mg/dL) |
|---|---|
| Total cholesterol | Below 200 |
| LDL (bad) | Below 100, lower if you have heart disease or diabetes |
| HDL (good) | 40 or more in men, 50 or more in women |
| Triglycerides | Below 150 |
Why your own target matters
There is no single safe number. If you have had a heart attack or stroke, or have diabetes, your doctor will usually aim lower. South Asians develop heart disease younger, so it is worth testing early.
What improves the numbers
- Less ghee, fried food and sweets.
- Regular walking or other exercise.
- Stopping smoking, which also raises HDL.
- Weight loss if you are overweight.
