GFR calculator (eGFR, CKD-EPI 2021)
Estimate glomerular filtration rate for adults from serum creatinine, age and sex, using the CKD-EPI 2021 equation, which does not use race.
Your result appears here as you type.
CKD stages by eGFR
Chronic kidney disease is staged by KDIGO. Stages G1 and G2 count as CKD only with other signs of kidney damage, such as albumin in the urine.
| eGFR (mL/min/1.73 m²) | Stage |
|---|---|
| 90 and above | G1: normal or high |
| 60 to 89 | G2: mildly decreased |
| 45 to 59 | G3a: mildly to moderately decreased |
| 30 to 44 | G3b: moderately to severely decreased |
| 15 to 29 | G4: severely decreased |
| Below 15 | G5: kidney failure range |
The formula
eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)^α × max(Scr/κ, 1)^−1.200 × 0.9938^age, multiplied by 1.012 for women. κ is 0.7 for women and 0.9 for men. α is −0.241 for women and −0.302 for men. Scr is serum creatinine in mg/dL.
When eGFR can mislead
- Acute kidney injury, when creatinine is changing quickly.
- Very high or very low muscle mass, amputation or malnutrition.
- Pregnancy, and children under 18.

What is a normal eGFR?
90 or above is normal in most adults, and it falls gradually with age. A result below 60 for three months or more suggests chronic kidney disease.
Why does CKD-EPI 2021 not use race?
The 2021 equation was developed to remove the race term from the earlier equations, while keeping similar accuracy.
How do I convert creatinine from µmol/L to mg/dL?
Divide by 88.4. So 100 µmol/L is about 1.13 mg/dL. The calculator converts it for you.
