What your BMI means
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres, squared. These are the World Health Organization adult ranges.
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25 to 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 and above | Obesity |
BMI for people from South Asia
South Asian adults tend to develop diabetes and heart disease at a lower BMI. A WHO expert group suggested paying attention from a BMI of 23, and higher risk from 27.5, so a “healthy” reading near 25 can still be worth discussing with your doctor.
When BMI can mislead
- It does not separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read high.
- It does not show where fat sits. Waist size adds useful information.
- It is not for pregnancy, and children use different charts.

How do I calculate my BMI?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For 70 kg at 1.75 m: 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9.
What is a normal BMI?
For adults, the WHO range is 18.5 to 24.9. South Asian adults may want to stay below 23.
Is BMI accurate?
It is a quick screening number, not a measure of body fat. A doctor will also look at waist size, blood pressure, blood sugar and family history.
