Apgar scoring chart

| Pulse | 0 absent, 1 below 100, 2 at 100 or more |

What the total means
The score describes how a baby is doing at that moment. Resuscitation must not wait for it, and it does not predict a child’s long-term health on its own.
| Score | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 7 to 10 | Reassuring |
| 4 to 6 | Moderately abnormal |
| 0 to 3 | Low |

What does APGAR stand for?
Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity and Respiration. The name also honours Dr Virginia Apgar, who devised the score in 1952.
What is a good Apgar score?
A score of 7 to 10 is reassuring. Many healthy babies score 7 to 9 at one minute, because hands and feet often stay blue for a while.
When is the Apgar score taken?
At 1 and 5 minutes after birth. If the 5-minute score is under 7, it is repeated every 5 minutes.
