Body surface area (BSA) calculator

Calculate body surface area from weight and height with the Mosteller formula.

Height

Your result appears here as you type.

The Mosteller formula

BSA (m²) = √(height in cm × weight in kg ÷ 3600). For 175 cm and 70 kg, that is √(175 × 70 ÷ 3600) = 1.84 m². Adults average around 1.7 m².

Where BSA is used

Clinicians use BSA to index measurements, such as cardiac output, to body size. Check any treatment calculation against your local protocol.

Common questions

Still unsure? Send us the question and a person — not a bot — will answer it.

What is a normal BSA?

There is no normal value as such, because it depends on body size. Around 1.7 m² is a commonly quoted adult average.

Why use the Mosteller formula?

It is simple, widely used, and gives results close to the older, more complex formulas.
