Mean arterial pressure (MAP) calculator
Calculate mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure from a blood pressure reading.
Your result appears here as you type.
The formula
MAP = (systolic + 2 × diastolic) ÷ 3. For a reading of 120/80, MAP is (120 + 160) ÷ 3 = 93 mmHg. Diastole counts twice because the heart spends about twice as long in it at a resting heart rate.
What the number means
MAP reflects the average pressure pushing blood to the organs. Around 70 to 100 mmHg is the usual range, and critical care guidelines commonly aim for at least 65 mmHg in septic shock.

What is a normal MAP?
Around 70 to 100 mmHg in most adults.
Why does 65 mmHg matter?
Below about 65 mmHg, organs may not get enough blood, so it is a common minimum target in critically ill patients.
What is pulse pressure?
Systolic minus diastolic. For 120/80 it is 40 mmHg.
