SGPT normal range
SGPT, also called ALT, is a liver enzyme. It leaks into the blood when liver cells are irritated.
Check your SGPT
Copy the numbers from your report. Fill in only what you have.
Your results appear here as you type.
For adults. The range printed on your report comes first, because labs differ. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Normal SGPT and SGOT
Labs print their own limits, and many use a lower upper limit for women.
| Test | Usual range |
|---|---|
| SGPT (ALT) | 7 to 56 U/L |
| SGOT (AST) | 8 to 40 U/L |
Common causes of high SGPT
- Fatty liver, linked to weight and diabetes.
- Hepatitis B or C.
- Some medicines and herbal products.
- Alcohol.
When to worry
A mild rise often settles, so doctors commonly repeat the test. See a doctor quickly for yellow eyes, dark urine, or a level many times the upper limit.

Is SGPT of 60 dangerous?
It is slightly above the usual limit. It is usually not an emergency, but it is worth repeating and discussing with a doctor.
How can I lower my SGPT?
It depends on the cause. For fatty liver, weight loss and exercise help most. Avoid alcohol, and tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products.
Are SGPT and ALT the same?
Yes. They are two names for the same enzyme.
