Reading a thyroid report

TSH comes from the brain and tells the thyroid how hard to work, so it moves the opposite way to the thyroid hormones.

Symptoms to mention

  • Underactive: tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation, heavy periods.
  • Overactive: weight loss, racing heart, sweating, tremor, feeling anxious.

Before the test

  • Tell your doctor about any thyroid medicine, and about hair and nail supplements, which can distort results.
  • Fasting is usually not needed.
  • Pregnancy changes the normal range, so your doctor will use different targets.

What is a normal TSH level?

Usually about 0.4 to 4 mIU/L in adults. Labs differ slightly, and pregnancy has its own range.

Is TSH of 5 high?

It is slightly above the usual range. Doctors usually repeat it and check T4 before deciding anything.

Can stress change thyroid results?

Serious illness can change them for a while, so results are often repeated after recovery.
