Vitamin D levels
Expert groups disagree slightly on the cut-offs, and these are the ones many labs print.
| Level (ng/mL) | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Below 20 | Deficient |
| 20 to 29 | Insufficient |
| 30 to 100 | Sufficient |
| Above 100 | High |
Why it is so common here
- Staying indoors and covering the skin in the sun.
- Darker skin makes less vitamin D from sunlight.
- Few foods are naturally rich in it.
What can help
Sensible time in the sun, oily fish, eggs and fortified foods all help. Ask your doctor before taking high-strength supplements, because too much can harm your kidneys.

What is a normal vitamin D level?
Many labs treat 30 to 100 ng/mL as sufficient. If your report is in nmol/L, divide by 2.5.
What are the symptoms of low vitamin D?
Often none. It can cause tiredness, bone pain and muscle weakness.
Can too much vitamin D be harmful?
Yes. Very high levels raise calcium and can damage the kidneys, usually from too many supplements.
